I remarked to Jaleh that though I say I'm teaching deliberately, it's done on a mostly unconscious level. You got me thinking about how I used language in one of my books (shopping it now) and I realized I use the relationship between culture and environment in much the same way, to teach the concepts that surround their species. While I love what you do with linguistics in your stories, I don't have enough background to take that path, and yet I endeavor to do much the same with my own strengths.Margaret M. I do find myself reevaluating the relevance of some of the "language" points I use in my story. (It's so easy to get excited in the first draft and just throw all sorts of things in, hoping it'll have some use later if it hasn't already been planned for, lol.)

I also find myself wanting to see more of the languages that were created for sf/f worlds (for those that have them, anyway). Just being able to see entire phrases and sentences in a new language gives me a better taste of the various cultures in a story.

Now, as a reader I do want to be able to guess at meanings (at least part of it) through body language cues or situational context, but on the other hand I also want to feel a little lost at first—like I'm actually a foreigner being immersed into a new culture (if that is what the POV character is experiencing, too.)

Even so, there is a fine line between lecturing readers, making them feel like five-year-olds, versus freely flaunting language just because it sounds/looks cool without heeding the fact that no one else but the author may have any idea what’s being said. (I find this to be true even in books that use real world languages.) Finding a place somewhere in between and combining it with relevancy…well, that would be ideal, imo.Tiyanahttp://tiyanamariewhite.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-937390557356997344.post-82610324058380753702011-07-13T20:24:45.303-07:002011-07-13T20:24:45.303-07:00I'm not so good at teaching, but stories that ...I'm not so good at teaching, but stories that make me think about relationships and culture stick with me.
