If you haven't yet seen "How Linguistics Can Help You"...

The series, which deals with how authors can use the principles of linguistics to help them with SF/F will now be appearing at Science In My Fiction. Today's post is on Articulatory Phonetics, or how the vocal tract makes sounds. Future posts will deal with Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, and Sociolinguistics.

  1. I just finished reading part one, never realized that linguistics could be such a hot topic. Though I suppose I should have guessed since I'm nerdy enough to have Marc Okrand's Klingon-English Dictionary and Conversational Klingon tape. And I remember the bit from behind the scenes of Undiscovered Country where Okrand had to overturn his rule of not having the verb "to be" in the language, just so he could translate Shakespeare into Klingon.

Very good post. I'll catch up to the next part here in a bit.
